Spraying HoK shimrin bases, sealer, clear

Do these go on a little rough? I'm very new to spraying and am learning as I go. I just sprayed a cycle with BC-25 black base and it seemed to have gone on rough. The only way I can get it to go on smooth is to hose it....and then I get runs. So obviously I'm doing something wrong. I realize there are lots of reasons why it may have gone on rough but as an observer of another painter I seem to recall that the glamour metallics like the other BC metallic bases seemed to be rough. I can't help but think this may contribute to the orange peel look later after clear.

I shot mine with an Iwata LPH-400 1.3/silver cap. I had a choice of another LPH-400 1.4 and two other caps (purple and orange).

In order to hit the 10PSI at the cap, what should I expect my inlet pressure to be? Was the 1.3 right for the black? Tech sheets said do not over reduce.
I've been trying to keep my fan around 8" tall and gun about 6" away. I'm new...so my distance keeps varying more than I like but I'm trying hard to keep everything consistent.

Had the same issue with the sealer. I used the hok black sealer. What size tips are you guys shooting sealer with?

The clear, UCC01, went on pretty well. Some orange peel but not terrible. I shot that with the 1.3 as well. I seem to remember reading that some guys preferred the 1.3 over the 1.4 and would increase the pressure a little to atomize it finer.

Some guidance on tip sizes, (color - silver, orange, purple) and pressures would probably help tremendously. Thanks for the great reading on the board!
The bike is last winter's project that I painted as well.

1.3 should have been find for the base and sealer (I use the orange cap). Possibly you didn't reduce them correctly?
If you are reducing correctly, try adding a tad bit more reducer than called for. Turn down your pressure. I always use quite a bit lower pressure for base versus the clear.
Do medium wet-wet coats

I've also always had a hard time with their sealer. You really have to shake and stir it for about 5-10 minutes.

Looks like you did a great job on the bike!

Thanks for the reply.
So what kind of inlet pressure should I be at to get the 10psi cap pressure? What do you find yourself setting it? With the trigger pulled, I was shooting at 15-20psi inlet pressure.
I think my clear coat orange peel is most likely me being afraid to go too heavy with the clear for fear of runs so I'm just spraying too light of a coat. On flat surfaces (parallel to the spray booth floor) there is virtually no orangepeel. I've slightly over reduced for better flowout but maybe I need to do a little more.
Thanks for the compliment on the scoot. It went way smoother than this one.

One more question... can the BC-25 black shimrin base be spotted in successfully? Reason why I ask is that I accidently cut thru while color sanding and decided to just reshoot the whole tank (since it was already sanded) rather than attempt to spot in and be able to see it. It's a shimrin base but doesn't have the metallic of course. My decision was to not chance it but for future reference....

Thanks in advance!

To be honest, I don't even know what I spray at. I just go by feel. I don't have gauges on my guns.
I know I use lower pressure on the base, versus the clear.
If I had to guess I would say about 25-35lbs on the base and 40-50lbs for the clear.

You can blend in the BC-25, and reclear the complete tank (or even blend the clear if you wanted to), but since it's a small part, I would just get the area covered with the black, then just put a medium wet coat on the complete tank.
Reason is, I've had instances where you just blend that small area, and reclear a part. Then you find out that you had a smudge elsewhere on the part. So it's safer just to add a coat of black to the complete part just to be safe.

What would running too low pressure produce with the finish? Would it cause roughness and orange peel with the base and clear? I think with the trigger pulled I was never over 20-25psi.

Too low will make it orange peel and rough.
Spraying with the gun too far away can also do this (this can also make it dry)

The only gauge I know of would be at the inlet of the gun. I know my Sata 3000 has a built in one, but I believe this would also read the pressure at the inlet.

Start a 'little' higher than your previous. Move it even higher during spraying if needed.
