Spraying Motorcycle Components (BMW R1200GS)

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and look forward to participating.
I just purchased a new motorcycle but I don't fancy the colour. Only bike available was silver and I want to respray the tank and front mudguard black gloss.
Can anyone suggest what preparation I should do to the existing paint job to accomodate the gloss black on the tank and the mudguard.
Furthermore, would the black gloss be sufficient as final coat or would a clear over the black be necessary?
Thanks

Hello and welcome!

You can use the existing paint job as the base under the new paint job.
You'll just need to sand it very good. You can either hand sand or use a machine sander (DA which stands for Dual Action)
You can use a 320 or 400 grit. Make sure the complete surface is 'dull'.
Make sure all chips or scratches are sanded out, primed, then resanded.

Then you can paint the black.
You can go with either a 'single stage' paint. Or you could go basecoat/clearcoat. The latter of the two is preferred type paint.

I forgot to mention that the front mudguard is plastic of some kind. Shall I adopt the same technique, flat with 400 grit, primer then paint? Okay to use Spies Hecker or any other reputable brand for the job? Thanks again.

You can use the same process as long as the guard is currently painted.
