stock color maybe a little boring?

Hi,
I am doing a little prepping to take my truck to a body shop next week.
I don't know anything about painting.
The original color is 1972 chev truck "Copper" metallic.
I would like it to be a little bit nicer than original, might as well I think.
I would like to make sure it sparkles enough under the clear.
Maybe a light midcoat of a micro copper flake?
Or maybe something else like copper pearl?
Maybe I shouldn't even mess around?

any advice, thanks,
Terri

Since you have never painted before, I would keep the paint as simple as possible. Possibly you can just choose another copper color that is very close to what was on there, but with a larger flake. This will give it more sparkle. Or, when they do the mix for you on the original color, they can use larger flakes anytime a small flake is called for in the mix. This will change the shade slightly, but will give you more sparkle.

Be sure and check out the rest of the forum. I'm sure you'll see there is a lot of useful info and tips in here.

Terri. I agree with Taz, you'll see a big difference between an oem paint job and a custom job. and so will everyone else. As Taz suggested, maybe a different color value of the copper with bigger metallic. Once it's cleared sanded and buffed, that mother will pop.

So, not a pearl?
Better to go with a slightly larger and different color metallic?
Do it mixed with the base color or do a mid coat?
Thanks,
Terri

Pearls are pretty mellow. Sounds like you want a bigger flake to give you more sparkle. The 'color' of the flake normally is just your typically a silver flake. But when mixed with other toners, the silver flake take on a different color. In your case, the silver flakes will tend to appear to be a copper type color.
Hope that makes sense.

Thank you for your help also been looking at pictures.
Problem is that I haven't been to a car show for years and don't really know what I like.
Well, I know I love Kandy, but that's way too fancy for this truck.
In some of the pictures on the internet a .004 micro flake is way too much sparkle, maybe being used as a midcoat causes this, so I wouldn't want to have a metallic mid coat done.
If just a larger size flake is used in the base color the effect would be much more toned down then?
Thank you,
Terri

You can control how much 'sparkle' with the size of the flake. This will also slightly change the original color if you alter the size of the flake in the formula.

Lot's of nice colors out there. Find one you like in the stock form, and go with it :bigokay:

maybe you would like the crystal effect over top of the color coat, but mixed in with the clear. It does give some sparkle but is kind of thing you don't really see it until the sun hits it. Hok makes it.
