stripe removal

I have a 1100 Vstar black that has two stripes red and silver curved around the tank and then cleared over(factory). I want to use the factory black as a base for my flame job. How can I get rid of the stripes under the clear. I think they are tape. Should I sand enough clear off to get to them and then heat and peal off or what. Have a friend that works a a high dollar bycicle factory that gets me all the paints for free that he get from paint reps. Pearls and colored clears and clears can't beat the price.

it's tough to get the "ghost" image to go away. You can sand the edges of the decal where it meets the paint (since it's all burried under clear anyhow) with some 220, then lay on a few thick coats of something like a K36, then repeat a couple times. Or you can use aircraft stripper to get the decal off, then prime and repaint. At any rate, you'll have a hard time getting away with using the factory black for your basecoat considering it's got decals that are cleared over all over it...

I just sand them off, start with 80 to get into the stripe and then I finish and featheredge it with 180.Prime and block it out level. It might come out with one blocking but 2 prime and blocks are safer since it's black.
