Striping paint...

Ok so I'm striping the paint of a 70' Mustang coupe. The car has been painted a good 3 times so its pritty thick. But i have a question, the driver side rear quarter panel is ALL fiberglass and I'm on a pritty slim budget. Could I just strip the fiberglass and if there is dents just pull them? The door isn't lining up because of the fiber glass. So I guess my question is is it a good idea? should i just replace the panel?

fiberglass strip

with my experiance i would be very careful to strip fiberglass you can't really strip it because if you break into the gelcoat you are asking for trouble causes a billion pinholes my suggestion would be to sand 180 da and high-build primer ,sand/block and reprime,sand/block 320 reprime sand/block 400 wet using guide coat each time far as dents go you cant pull dents like on sheet metal use either fiberglass filler or something else compatible fill all dents before initial prime and as far as a new quarter thats up to you price time is the other side fiberglass as well good luck please let me know if this helps you thanks:patriot:

Are you saying someone built the quarter up with filler? If so, I say get it all off first and see how bad the metal really is. If it's to bad to pull then see if you have a local yard that has a good used quarter left. If you can cut it off yourself you'll have more control of where the cuts are done.

What do you mean pinholes? If i was to take it to bare metal see how bad it is and build it up. Would that work?

I think that the other guy thought you were saying that the quarter panel was made out of fiberglass. If you sanded fiberglass down to far you would burn through the gel coat and actually hit the fibers and uncoated fiberglass has a lot of pin holes.

I say yes, take it down to bare metal and see how bad it really is. Post a pic whe nyour down tearing off the filler.

The lower part of the quarter looks like it needs a patch panel and I think fro mwhat I can see that the upper part of the quarter is probably repairable. Get all the filler off and see if you can pull the dents out more. Or, is that your filler work? Anyway nice work so far.

It is my filler job. The lower back half of the quarter is all dented and it had a good inch or more of filler. But I have looked for a replacment panel and i can't find one. So what I'm thinking about doing is cutting it out beating out the dents, welding it on, use a little kitty hair fiberglass, sand it, put a thin coat of filler over top and call it good. what do you think? I'm a little worried about the shaping of it, when I beat out the dents.

You may be able to beat out the dents straight enough to be able to fill it. It will be a lot of work. Try even jcwhitney.com for a patch panel. They have patch panels for some odd ball stuff.
