G'day, trying to figure out the best approach to create a sunburst effect on bare plywood using a combination of wood stain (turps base), metallic acrylic lacquer and clear coats. Anyone who's seen a sunburst Fender guitar will know the effect I'm trying to achieve. In this case I'm painting my custom amp speaker box.
See attached pics to get the gist.
Here's what I think I'll do: (please critique the method)
1. Sand wood to 240 - not too smooth to allow penetration of stain
2. Stain wood - dry overnight
3. Spray weak primer/filler (60%primer, 40%thinner) skim coat, no sanding (I was told by the auto paint shop that this base needs to be laid before acrylic lacquer can go down on bare wood and the grey colouring won't be seen given the weak mix!)
4. Clear coat acrylic lacquer - several coats then sand to flat
5. Sunburst metallic red - no sand
6. Clear coast - several then sand and buff.
MOst of this is pretty straight forward except for the primer on bare wood (step 3). Has anyone tried acrylic lacquer on bare wood?
I have also read on this forum of people using sanding sealer. Would this be OK to use instead?
Thanks
