Thinners/Reducers

Hi all, have been reading a lot on here (great forum and articles). I have only sprayed cellulose and 2k, one tiny question I have after all this reading, might sound stupid to you experts but, reducers are mentioned here rather than thinners, are "the reducers" so-called because of the type of paint they thin down e.g Candy's ???? Also, the term "clear" is used, I presume again that it's for the type of paint, whereas lacquer is the name given for finishing 2k base??? :ears: Thanks in advance for the education

Good question....I've been spraying 25+ years, and not for sure what the exact reason it switched over from thinner to reducer.
The only reasons I can think of is that thinners were known more to reducer the old lacquers, and reducers are known to reduce the enamels and urethanes.
BUT, I can think of a couple paint lines that are/were urethanes and are reduced with thinners.

Lacquer is a "type" of paint.

Clearcoat is an actual clear paint that you apply last. Even lacquer had a clear.

In the USA we call Clearcoat what you guys in the UK call Lacquer it is the same thing just a difference in location. kinda like we call fenders and hoods you guys would say wings and bonnets ;)

It is easy to get confused when crossing the pond.
I use laquer thinner to clean my guns and to reduce my laquer primer for guide coating. But I never thin my 2K clear with it... :think1:
