To prime or not to prime...

Seems like I've read different ideas about painting over factory paint. Some suggest scuffiing up the factory paint and go with your base coat while others say you need to scuff up the paint and primer before anything. I just pulled my fenders, tank and side panels. After scuffing them all up with 400 grit I kinda want to jump right to the flames (bike is black and I'm just wanting to add ghost blue flames). Is it really necessary to prime over a perfectly good painted surface?

400 was a touch coarse for painting directly over with a pearl or metallic, try some 600 next time. You should be fine but sometimes the pearl or metallic will lay in the sandscratches and exagerate them.

I'm going to rebase the hole things black and then do the pearl over that so hopefully I'll be fine. I only used 400 on the rear fender that had the sticker on it.
