Too much information!

I have been reading the Fames Board for a few weeks now and think it is great. But for a complete newbee, the amount of information is allmost over whelming. I am wanting to flame my truck and motorcycle at some point. So my question is... is there a comprehensive start to finish how to for this? Including equipment recomendations, technique, type of paint, etc., etc.? Maybe a howto book recomendatoin.

Thanks

There are several "How-To" books and videos on the subject. When I started, I used Jon Kosmoski's book, "Kustom Painting Secrets". And also a couple of his videos. It helped me out by seeing someone actually doing a paint job.

Since your question seems to be aimed at a "one way" or "best way" angle, I have to tell you that painting vehicles is alot like making love to your wife. Most guys can do it; most guys use similar, but varied techniques; but in the end there are many differences in guys actual performance; And, (this just in...) some guys are very good, and some... well, lets just say that some guys should hire it done. So understand that there are thousands of techniques and styles and preferences when it come to making love...er, I mean painting. Sorry, my mind drifted a bit there. The basics are in those books, and on this forum. And you can ask questions here, so long as you know you might get several different answers to the same question. My advice is to get a book, read it until you fully understand the steps to a basic paintjob, and then start practicing on a test panel until you're comfortable with your gun and compressor set up. Then, let her rip. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/luck.gif

Good luck. Oh, and good luck painting too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lolsign.gif

Ok, ok, honey, be patient, I'll be right there... I'm on the FlamesBoard again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bigokay.gif

Thanks Flamethrower!

Does anyone ever give classes, I wonder? (For flames, not... er, nevermind) Or I would love to work free in a shop that does this kind of work. Anyone know of this in the Austin, Texas area?

In the mean time I will get the book and vid you recommended.

its not the size of your gun... its the way you dust the tips... or lay down the gloss...or flow the product...wait on a second note maybe different size equipment would come in handy...big giant flake gun for the high paying jobs...regular old gun for everyday... a touchup gun for the detail work ... and maybe even an old beater for that nasty primer work....

For that matter, I didn't even know rabbgp was married.
But if I'm ever in the area, I'll stop in to see how good he's been painting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yay.gif

Just teasin', I guess I should have used a different analogy. I had no idea my example would generate so much commotion. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif

Glad to hear you do just fine.

Do get a book and videos. I must have read that book 5 times before I started that first paint job. It really helped.

Good luck.

Got the book last week and am in the process of reading it. Any video's in particular that you would recommend?

The two I have are "Cycle Flame Painting" & "Kameleon Kolors Made Easy" by HOK Jon Kosmoski. Of the two, I really recommend Cycle Flame Painting, but there are several titles out there that are good videos to watch. Go to autobodydepot.net and go to their video how-to link. You will find several titles to choose from.
