I have a balck VTX tank with ghost blue flames that I need to repair. The tank has a 1/4" ding in the paint. The plan is to sand down as far as needed, prime, black base, ghost blue flames, then clear.

My question is in regards to paint coverage. Say I sand a 3" diameter area around the ding, and cover most of that with black base. I assume you would never add paint to an area that hasn't been sanded. How do I add the ghost blue flames? There is going to be that area that goes from sanded to smooth, do you paint past the sanded area? I'm a little confused?

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gifHope this makes sense. Any help would be much appreciated.

stretch, the whole tank should be sanded so the whole tank can be cleared, spotting in on a gas tank is a no no if gas is spilled on the tank it could get under the repair and create a huge problem
Make your repair
Scuff the whole tank for paint ( 600 grit)
Spot in black base
Fix the flames
Clear the whole tank
Scuff and buff

Thanks EZ, I was getting worried that nobody would respond.

On the same topic, let's say I'm taking a VTX with the 3D emblems on the side and just adding flames to a new paint job. How close to the emblem do you sand and when you reclear, what do you do? Clear right up to the emblem in which case you're painting over unsanded paint or just get close and let it all dry and buff it all out?

Maybe this is a stupid problem that really shouldn't be an issue. I had a bit of a problem before when I taped off an emblem and sanded the whole tank. I sanded up to about a 1/4" from the emblem. When I recleared, the spray got closer to the emblem than I could with the sandpaper and thus cover the unsanded areas. It ended up flaking up a bit? What's the right way to do this or I'm a just overthinking things.

Stretch, the best way to do it would be to tempory remove the emblems clear then re apply after you scuff and buff elimaniting the problems you mentioned. you can remove them not damageing them by appling a little heat ( heat gun or hair drier on a hot setting ) or use a piece of fishing line and kinda use it like dental floss in between the emblem and tank then roll of the leftover 2 sided tape with your fingers. sorry it took so long for the reply, i havent been getting email notifications on Flames board posts, Scott's still working out some of the bugs with the new design.

This post is covered (so don't do this) but this is what you do if you can't remove the piece.Tape up the piece to protect it then wet grey scuffy it.I cut a scuffy in 3 pieces for autos but all you need is a little piece for one spot.Almost fold it in 1/2 and take the single side sticking out farther and cram it into the tape edge and scuff in short back and forth strokes all the way around it.Clean the area real good with water while doing it,dry it,retape it and you're ready for wipedown and paint.Nothing on a scooter warrants this approach because everything should be removed (or you'll be 'butching' it),but....
