Touchup small area?

I just picked up a tank from my buddy that I'm going to flame. I had asked him before bidding what condition the bike was in and he said it was great. It's a black bike so I was planning on wetsanding with 600 grit and laying down some flames. Trouble is, there's a good 1" scratch right in the middle of the tank. I was hoping I could scuff the whole thing, then use my airbrush to lay down a bit of black over the scratch and let it dry. Then scuff that area again then begin the flames. Anyone see any problems with this? I'm worried the new black may show through. Any recommendations?

Thanks-Stretch

Black is pretty forgiving. I would sand the whole tank, spot in the black, intercoat clear the whole tank, then lightly sand and lay out your flames.
