Two tone 2k and COB?

HEllo,

I 'm new here and would like to say what a great informative site it is.

I'm a hobbyist painter who paints the various creations coming out of my shed.

I'd like to attempt my first two tone job.

The truck is currently in OEM 2K white. I'd like to add a Champagne COB alternate colour.

Since im respraying, should i use clear over base systems for both colours? I was trying to avoid changing from factory white as it would mean more work etc. (this is only a work truck).

Can I lay the champagne base straight over the 2K white (after I gently scuff it with a scotchbrite), then clear over the entire lot? Then let it dry, then knock down the paint edge gently before flow coating?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Cheers

Since it's just a work truck, I would mask off the area so you can spray that area. Go ahead and scuff the area. THEN before doing any painting. add a 1/8" fineline stripe along the edge of the masked off area (be sure and butt it up tight against the edge of the masked off area).

You are ready to paint---

I would suggest going over with a gray sealer as a metallic will go over the gray better than the factory white.
Once you get the sealer down, go ahead and spray the metallic color. Then start clearing. Spray approx 2 coats. On the very last coat, go ahead and remove the 1/8" fineline that you added to the edge of the masked up area. Then do one more coat.

Doing it this way will 'step' down your paint and clear edge so it's not so harsh. You can wetsand and buff this down so it's fairly flat. Then you can add a tape painstripe (possibly black) to cover the edge.

If you think your metallic color is going to be pretty thick, you can even do two 1/8" finelines. Do your sealer and base color, then remove the first 1/8", then spray a couple coats of clear. Remove the second 1/8" fineline. Then add one more coat of clear. This will really "step down" the base and clear

This way you don't have to reclear over the original white.

:luck:

Taz,

Thankyou for the advice. I wouldn't have thought of using fine line as a step.

I really appreciate that tip. Picked up my 2K white over the weekend, so it's progressing nicely.

Cheers
