Urethanes all the way! Much nicer to work with than Acrylic Enamels and much better durability, shine and it cures much faster (few hours compared to few weeks). The only time I will use Acrylic Enamels anymore is for sign brackets and such that need to look nice but be cheap. If you can't swing the cost of base/clear, then a single stage urethane should be used.

Not real sure of the chemical makeup of urethanes. I know that each brand has differing formulas to get thier own type of urethane. I have used urethane convertor for acrylic enamels (didn't see much difference except cost$$$). I'm pretty sure modern automotive paint is based in some part on acrylic plastics, this includes urethanes, so acrylic urethane is probably just a longer term for the more generic term urethane. I'm just speculating here, so don't take it as absolute truth.
