Hey guys, I know you probably can't stand newbs who come in here asking for help when they have done no research but I have been all over youtube look for what I can do to fix my problem.

Originally I had a scratch in my car door, big, ugly, noticable (Except at night) so I bought my paint from an autoshop. The code was K13.

Now this went horrible, the paint was duplicolor. It was like latex. I was lightly sanding it and I could peel huge strips off.

THe paint on my car door was too messed up to salvage. I sanded down to bare metal so it would stick, did LIGHT coats of rustoleum High Gloss Black

and waited till I got a full color. So now my car door is more or less Grey instead of black. I wet sanded lightly at 600 and then used 1500.

When the car door is wet It matches the rest of the car obviously, and I can see my reflection.

My problem is that I don't wanna keep - sanding, repainting. Because I think I may run out of paint and not only that, I'm pretty sure its not the right way.

I've done the door twice. The first time I tried Krylon Clear Coat. This came out TERRIBLE. Not only did it not give me a gloss, it came out much more grey than black.

Was it because I was jumping too many gaps in the sand paper grit? Or was it because I wasn't spraying the clear on right. If I sprayed it too far it became HORRIBLY fogged out and I couldn't sand it out, and if I did it too heavy I would get orange peel.

I watched this video and although his worked, I can't get mine too. ANY HELP? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

I cannot get this right!!!!!

welp, dont be afraid to ask and dont be afraid of the responses. 1st things 1st. yer usin rattle cans, which any product from a rattle can is rather thin, so the coats of paint will be thin. you need a primer ( if bare metal, i would suggest an epoxy primer) 1st on bare metal. if the door panel just needs new paint, then follow the directions on the primer. get the base coat on in the time it says on the can. overlap each pass of the base coat( which is the K13) and dont apply it too thick. read the directions and let dry how long it says. get good coverage, then go to the clear. now a few things to throw in here: krylon isnt really a good choice for clearcoat. i suggest gettin to an auto body suppy store ( not autozone or sumthing like that) that sells auto paint. they will have better quality rattle can paints. now, since you are using rattle cans, the clear has to have quite a few coats as when you wetsand you will be removing clear ( i was taught that i sand off one coat of clear when wet sanding, and thats shooting nason clear, and it gos on thicker than a rattle can) a good way to tell is if the sludge from wet sanding turns the color you sprayed, stop and add more coats of clear. when spraying, i like to get at least 3 coats of clear, so with a ratlle can, its gonna take more coats, but dont try and make less work by spraying thicker coats. let each coat dry the time it states on the label. and when wet sanding, since yer new to it, i'd say start with 1000 grit, then go to 1500.

Awesome response time! Thank you man and great answer!

Also, should I be concerned if the color seems faded when I spray the clear? Or is that TOO thin

Sometimes if it's pretty humid out, the black or the clear will turn gray since it will soak up moisture. That's the only reason I can think of for it turning gray on you.
Maybe it was a lousy day out when you sprayed?

When you stripped it to bare metal you should have stripped it like TomSteve mentioned.

That's about all I can suggest. I'm not too familiar with spray can painting.
Good luck to you!

taz, some time ago i got into high power rocketry and used rattle cans to paint em. i got tedious on the finish, not that it helped em fly better, but because, well, i get tedious. i messed up a LOT of paint jobs and had some pretty big messes. i learned quite a bit then, and the big thing was rattle can paints are thinned quite a bit to get em to spray.
one little tip for ya tommy921: if ya put the cans in some warm water and warm em up for a bit, the paint wil lay down smoother. just be sure to wipe all the water off the can b4 spray as to not get any water drippin on the finish.

In addition to the spray can clear comments...three coats might not be enough too. Here's why...as tomsteve mentioned, the clear in an aerosol can is thinner. The truth of the matter is, it's about 1/2 as thin as you can purchase at an auto paint store. Aerosol cans (spray cans) have to use a lot of Acetone in the mix to reduce the viscosity so that it will spray out of that tiny little spray nozzle that most spray cans come with. That spray can clear might be 15-20% solids at best...the Nason you were mentioning could be (if it is high solids) as high as 50-60% solids. Just factor that into the number of coats you apply...but remember the good advise before; allow each coat to dry properly before applying another coat.
Don't forget your respirator and gloves!

Ok guys back again! Thanks for the help. This time I tried rustoleum paint to roll it on. 75% paint 25% thinner. I rolled it ond I got a lot of bubbles but they popped. My problem was such uneven coating. After I sanded it I was left with this catostrophe.

Why is the paint laying so oddly? I have a high durable foam roller too!
