In ideal conditions you should ONLY use a fan rated for an explosive atmosphere (elec code 1.1) for your exhaust. The size of your fan (RPM and blade size) will deterimine the size of your intake and exhaust. Thats my 2 cents....But this is what I did in a similiar situation and should NEVER be taken as advise on the correct way of doing things. I put a 20" box fan on the "inlet side" with a "trim-to-fit" filter from wal-mart on the ground, and a 3' "exhaust on the floor in the opposite corner(filtered as well). This way, I could in essesnts pressurize the enlosure and reduce the risk of explosion by sucking in "clean" air then exhausting the "heavier than air fumes from the bottom. Remember, don't try this at home....... Squirt

Here in an encore presentation are some pictures of my 1st homemade paintbooth. I simply made the wall at one end out of AC filters and put 4 20" X 20" box fans at the other end to vent out. Not exactly what I would call explosion proof but I never had a problem with it...

Tenacious, are you still using this setup? Have you made any modifications? If you were to do it again would you make any changes?

No I'm not still using it. I have a shop now and we built an all metal paintbooth.

If I were to build one like this again the only changes I might make would be to add at least 2 more fans so there would be 6 total.

TC, nice booth. Can you go a little more in depth about how you put it together? I never heard of fire resistant sheetrock, and how did you install the metal siding? Where are your exhaust fans mounted? It looks great. Did you heat it?

Thanks.

Fire rated sheet rock should be available at any home depot or lowes or other home improvement store. Any place that carries drywall should have it. Mine has a stamp on it that says "Fire Resistance Classification".

Right now I have 6 box fans mounted on the door to vent it out but next week I'll be replacing those with an explosion proof axial tube fan that will be ducted under the booth. I can post pics once I do it.

The sheet metal on the inside is simply screwed to the drywall and the metal frame.

Let me say this --- were I to do it again, I wouldn't have done it this way. This booth is way overkill! If I were to do it again, I'd make a frame from 1" square tube and then just skin the whole thing with sheet metal and forget the drywall.

Something I have run across that has givin me a good idea for the inside of a booth is 5'x10' PVC board.I was in my local sign shop not long ago and they were unloading several sheets for a job.I had to go over and check it out and I thought it would be great for the interior of the booth. It is bright white and should accept spray on booth coating very well, water resistant and easy to clean. And to beat it all,it isnt all that expensive.

I used to use a 20" box fan in my little home made booth, and then I replaced it with a 16" diamater attic ventilation fan and boy, what a HUGE difference!!! The one little 16" fan cost about $70 at Home Depot, put it must move 5x as much air as that box fan.....

have you considerd using a positive pressure Booth IMO this is the best , safest & cheapest way to go do a search for spraybooth or positive pressure under search here on forum if you need any more help & want to go this route I will be happy to write some things up if need be??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/fire.gif Pressurizing the room is done by the incoming air while air in the room is forced out. Using this concept of a "positive pressure" environment, you overcome many problems created by the "negative pressure" environment created by the fan in the window or wall blowing out. Dust control is the main reason for this pressurizing this also reduces the need for fire safe fan A negative pressure brings dust from every crack and crevasse in the room while positive pressure means you only need to deal with the incoming air through the filters.

What you're doing is running a fan before the intake filters that move a little more air(after it goes thru the filters) than the exhast fan pulls out. Then you have a slight pressure inside the booth that pushes air out any bad sealing doors and cracks instead of sucking in unfiltered air.

so u just use a larger fan in the intake then u would use in the exhaust? were should i place the vents? in the bottom of the wall and how big should they be ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif

I'd recommend the input being up higher and the output being lower. Keeping the input high prevents it from blowing up any dust that may be in the room. Lower exhaust on opposite side would then create a sort of down-flow/cross-flow. I could be wrong but that's what I'd do.

I had the benefit of having a good friend help me build my setup. He's a registered and licensed engineer, who owns his own HVAC company /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/agree.gif As I recall, for my particular application, he said I needed 10 sq ft of "filter" fo rthe fan to pull through for every 2000cfm's? (It's been a while.....)

Is there a way of running the exhaust thru a charcoal filter or some other type filter to get rid of the paint fume smell? I am really trying to build my booth so as nobody will have a reason to complain.
