I am having a friend to make me some vinyl decals for my flames, has anyone done this before and does it leave a clean line?

Sorry..I just ready that and it didn't come off as funny as I thought it would..it came off as more of me being an *** .....I don't know how to delete posts, so I'm just apologizing post-non-humorously.

PS...to answer your question, there are companies making vinyl and even magnetic little-flame kits that will stick to anything, and I've seen a (input a HUUUGE "1" here) minitruck even make it into a magazing with a set of vinyl flames on it, but for the cost and hassle...spray some flames on your ride. Vinyl is so ..... 80's!

I am going to use the Vinyl decals (these are custom made from flames I made up) instead of taping the flames, then painting. Has anyone ever done this before?
I guess I will try it and see what happens.

I've never done it personally but it's been alot.Put the decals over clear to be safe, oyu can put them over base color or intercoat clear but you have to be carefull and if there's any trapped solvents the decals will bubble.Put them over the sanded clear with a little soap in water and squeegy them out once in position and let dry in the sun for the day.Actually before you do that ask your buddy about scuffing the decal. Most can't be sanded but a White 3M Scotchbrite will very finely scuff it without removing color. After they've dried clear them in.I must warn you if you want to lose the edge it's going to take alot of clearing and sanding, and time.To do it put down 3 coats of clear and sand a little off, clear and sand a little more.To completely remove the edge you'll probably remove the edge you're looking at about 8 coats of clear to remove something the thickness of Harley's decals or auto pinstripe tape. When they're gone put 2 more coats on to guarrantee your millage for protection.Don't get carried away sanding because it's real easy to break through the edge and burn the color off the decal.

I am talking about using the vinyl flames as a stencil. Will experiment and let you know.

Works great , I've done it , not for flames but I did a checkerboard pattern on a sprintcar (as seen below) and it was very easy to do and it did not bleed through . First I painted the yellow and the airbrushed outline , then the white background , layed out the vinyl and then painted the black . once dry I peeled all the pieces off and then cleared , would have taken hours to do with tape . I used Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000 base coat .

It will work as a template I have done it before. Just make sure you don't apply too much material too quickly or it will curl on the edges. But you end up with really clean edges. I used a spray mask.

I'm reading you different than everyone else, you are using the vinyl as a stencil and not stick-on flames... right?

Might work and be reusable, but may bleed under the vinyl. Try it and let us know if ir works.

If you are talking about stick-on flames, disregard this post.

Obviously, it does work ok. I found this site and thought I'd share. They're selling vinyl masking kits. Good marketing, as it is probably just the vinyl left from the sheet after they cut out the flame decal. They are large (car size) and kinda generic but still a good idea.
