Water based paints???????

That's all I use...

I'm pretty new to painting and after doing some research decided to start right out with waterborne paint. I use Auto-Air and have gotten quite used to it. I can't compare it to uros 'cause I've never used them but I've had good results with the Auto-Air. My first order came with a DVD showing how to use it. You spray, then heat set with a heat gun for a few seconds. It's then dry to the touch. For laying flames or anything involving taping you need to clear the first coat. They have a base coat clear you can use for that. What I like is that all you need for clean up is water. The more I read about custom painting, the more I see that waterborne is the "future" of custom paint. Being in California, our environmental laws are some of the strictest in the nation so I figured I'd start learning with it rather than go through the hassle of using uros and then relearning with waterborne.

I think Auto Air is great

I really like Auto Air and there are a couple of cheap tricks I love with it.
  • You can simply thin it with water
  • You can thin it with glass cleaner
  • It cleans up with glass cleaner before it dries if you make a mistake
  • It dries really fast
  • You can go over it with a Scotch Brite pad to smooth it out between colors(this helps with an ultra smooth clear coat)
You were talking about Createx. Createx actually owns and makes Auto Air.

I'm a urethane guy but I've played with water based. So far my favorite is ETAC it sprays close to uro of course it does not dry as fast. I shot white etac straight out of the bottle in an HP-C airbrush (0.20 tip) and the stuff really impressed me, no spitting. AL

water base

Al createx is primarily a textile paint. Auto air as far as I'm concerned is crap.
I also use uros. But if I do use water base I'll use Golden airbrush colors. Yep you can use the automotive clears over them. I have over the last year talked to many of the more well known painters that we all hear about. Everyone of them has said the same thing. You will not get the depth colour or movement with them an do not use them.Although they will not admit it publicily. The thing I don't like is rough texture you get and having to heat set them. When guys tell you to thin them with a household cleaner there's something wrong. Not for me, but to each his own.

I've used most. Createx, Auto Air, Aero pro (similar to Golden) Dr Martins. They really are a headache to use. I wont knock them because i have seen some good work done using these paints but in the last 4 yrs i moved over to solvents, PPG, RM and HOK, and they are in a higher league. I can get better detailing and no tip dry. Also they work out cheaper too.
