How many coats do you guys lay knowing your going to sand a bunch off to get rid of peel and to make it flat? Ive been having some break through problems and I wanted to know if Im putting on enough coats to start.

I use three or four, depending on how it lays down.

I have never broken thru using three, but i have when using two. I block it off pretty hard now, though.

Gotta have it perfect!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yay.gif

I use to use Dupont Clear and thought I was putting on 3-4 wet coats if I was going to wet sand half of it off and I use to bust through to the basecoat easily with 600-800 grit. I switched to HoK UC-35 and rarely if ever have a problem sanding through it. I just shot Valspar clear a few weeks ago. I sprayed 3 coats on a car fender and then wet sanded with 320 aggressively to see if it would sand through. Sanded smoooooooooth with no break throughs to the base. Just my two cents...

Not being smart, but why would you use 600 grit to sand clear? If the clear does not have a lot of dust, I start with 1500 and finish with 2000. I don't have any trizact......

If it has cured more than two or three days, I might go to 1200 or 1000, but never coarser than that...

Just wondering what your reasoning is??

hmmmmmmm...well i DO NOT use 600-800 grit on my final coats of clear at the end of the job. i DO USE 600-800 on the buffer coat of clear that i apply to the basecoat & then do my artwork/graphics. i want to level the clear nicely and have tooth for the next layers.

hmmmmm...I should of clarified that, my fault...

I always used to use 600, but after doing some research, a I found a lot of painters like to use 1000 grit........ LudicrousSpeed

Yeah, I know what you mean....... I thought you were talking about your final coats, not under graphics. I used to use 600 under graphics, but now I use 1000.

For my topcoat I never used 600, I always started with at least 1000.

does a 1000 grit really leave enough tooth on the surface for adhesion?

Lately I've been using more 800 grit on clear to level after graphics etc. If I get close to an edge, 800 is less likely to sand through as easily as 600 does....
