heres the run down. im 16 and bought 2 bikes for restoration...

got them both for $350 locally. they both run but need work. it will be my first time painting a bike. i know what kind of paints i need and how to apply them, but what is the point of wet sanding? does it make any difference if i dry sand? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/newbie.gif

it keeps the dust down, is easier to control and watch what your sanding, cuts more evenly, helps prolong use of sand paper and keeps the grains clear of gunk.

i'm sure there are a lot more things. i'm a newbe myself so i'll let someone else chime in and add or subtract from my list

for my first paint job, I probably picked something way too complicated. It was frustrating, but looked ok for a while... I'll be redoing my bike soon. i'd suggest going simple. since you're restoring, you may want to hunt online for some pics of what those bikes looked like back in the day to get some ideas. Probably sticking to one or two colors would be good. Also try to practice everything on scraps first, especially clearcoat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/luck.gif

thanks...however even though im restoring, i want to give it some kick. these bikes rip and i want the paint to suit the way it runs...the way they looked back in the day is 1 tone colors. as you can see on the red one, thats origional paint (pretty dam clean for being 30 years old)!

and thanks for the luck...im half way there on the yellow one. all i need to do is re-tune the carbs and give it a paintjob and it goes into the adds and on my front lawn with a nice bright orange and black for sale sign on it.

Since you plan on selling it, I wouldn't go too wild on it!

Congrats though! Enjoy working on them!

Well, they're both Honda SilverWings. Old farts like me are probably going to be looking at them for their ole ladys or something. You might stick clear of puking skulls or naked women on these.

wet sanding

hello personally i only wet sand right before your first base coat i use 400 wet then only wet for purpose of another color 600 wet and then only wet for clearcoat 800 or finer i like to keep in mind the higher the grit the shorter the stroke need more help will gladly put my two cents in. thanks
