What brands do you guys use, and where to get em?

OK, I am new to the custom paints, but not painting itself. I do it as a hobby, but not for a living. I typically use Dupont stuff, but I would like to try something truly custom.

I found the INNATE site from here, and I like the prices. I like HOK's reputation and the effects also.

Is the Innate stuff ok?

What do you guys use, and where do you get it?

Also, how do you know what something is basically going to look like without doing a lot of experimenting? Do the chip books show you this?

Any help appreciated! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

The HOK chip book will tell you what that combo will look like;ie. a pearl over black and white and a candy over a selection of bases. If you want to make other combinations all you can do is test panel it.If i do a test panel I'll label it for future reference. One thing I will do is lay down a few different bases on one panel and label them, then run a piece of tape over the top strip where I labeled them. Then candy or pearl it and remove the tape before clearing. Then you have a strip of the different bases showing and what that '3rd stage' make makes it look like. You can also go one step farther and tape out each coat of pearl or candy so when you're done you can see how each coat changes the color but I don't think you can do this with catalized candy since it stays wet so long,it works great using basecoat paints though.

If you're going to order liquid from these places try to get a shipping and Hazmat fee, sometimes these charges can override the savings and the local paintstore will end up being cheaper.I don't play with HOK so I just get a pearl from the paintstore, everything else I've been able to make in PPG base but if you want true candy,go HOK.PPGs Radiance line will bleach out fast in the sun like HOK's Neons.Watched a maroon Neon go pink in days worth of sun and a deep tangerine Radiance go real light yellow-orange in 6 months.

I've done the custom deal with Dupont stuff, but noticed that it takes a little more clear to burry the graphic work done with Dupont. I've also put HoK on top of Dupont (dupont being my main basecoat color) with no probs.

If you are going to paint as a hobby I would suggest looking at Coastairbrush.com 'cause they sell HoK is small quantities. I think Innate does too, but rarely remember to go there to order. If you use it by the quart, get it from your local jobber.

Expirementing is sometimes the only way to go & you can do it on aluminum sign blanks. That's how you learn and once you get an idea of how things work you can vision it in your head w/o expirementing.

One other thing to mention. I think you can do any kind of custom paint work with any reputable paint line. I usually go with the product that yields the results I'm looking for.
