What did I do wrong???

Where did I go wrong? This happened on a practice tank for a rat bike I am building so that's no biggie, but I plan on using the same idea on the car I am painting. Here's the sequence of events: I primed the tank and painted with 3 coats of HOK bc-25 black basecoat. I let if flash between coats.Waited about30 min after the last basecoat flashed then I taped it off and applied HOK red to red marbelizer. About 15 seconds after I finished spraying I applied plastic to the paint, patted it down and waited about 1 minute then pulled the plastic.YIKES!! it pulled most of the black right offleaving the primer visible.(my son really likes the red/blackedge/and silver look.. LOL). I am planning on using the silver to white on some tape outs on the car I am painting..but I need to figure out where I messed up. Did I apply the marble too soon? the plastic too soon? Did I pull the plastic too soon?? Any ideas guys??As always..thanks in advance..

I always use a KO Seal II between the primer and basecoat when using HOK. It comes in black, silver, and white.

While I don't know the procedures for marbleizing... it would seem prudent to shoot an intermediate coat of clear (SG-100?) over the base before doing the other stuff.

Everything I've read about the marble paint ( including HOK's tech sheet) simply states that it needs to be used over a base coat. Even on the forum I have not read where it is applied on top of an interclear over the basecoat...
so I'm not sure if that is the core problem, although I'm sure it would be a great workaround..

you probably didn't let the base dry enough. and you might have added too much basecoat. if the base coat is too think it can't properly dry.

Well that shouldn't be a problem on the car. I basescoated that last week and and since 'roughed ' it with 800 grit and will dust it once more with base coat before marbeling.. wish me luck!! :)

Hey guys, shot the car yesterday. I think it looks pretty good. Everyone else says it looks great....but you know how it is when you know where every little defect is..
Thse silver marble worked GREAT! I dusted the car with another coat of b/c then took my time doing my taping for the graphics. The silver marble was TOTALLY different than the red I used previously. The silver was almost like a kandy, being very thin and transparent, while the red was almost like another base coat. Maybe HOK messed up when I ordered it. The bottle was labeled red-red marbelizer...hmm...but I digress...I sprayed the silver applied the plastic and pulled it... YAAAY ..it worked :) I tried laying the plastic on flat and pulling, but for me I found dabbing it with a big ol' wadded up piece of plastic gave me the effect I was looking for. Hopefully I can get some pics later today and post them...
Thanks for all your help everyone!!

:bigokay:

Glad to hear the second try worked out for you. I would definitely waited a little longer after adding the basecoat and adding the marbleizer. The problem might have been that you put the marbleizer on too heavy and it ate into the base.

Looking forward to seeing the pics!!!

just a follow up...
I was going through my paints and took another look at the label on the "red-to-red marbleizer"...
oops..I had grabbed the wrong paint..:sillyme: nooob.. I grabbed a red that I had gotten to practice airbrushing with. Well, at least I found out the you can marbelize with regular paints..I'll just have to reduce it more.. next time
