I’m doing a restoration, which might be somewhat understated for this forum, on a German MG42 machine gun tripod. What I would like to know is what would be the best paint for such a re-paint.
First some info on the item.
It has been repainted since the war and what I plan to do is get it cleaned either with shot or sand. After this I will then give it a couple of coats of Red Oxide, then two coats of Panzer Grey and finally two coats of Ordnance Tan, as per the original and its wartime changes.
As mentioned, I would like to know what would be the best type of paint for such a job on stripped and cleaned plain (carbon) steel.
Originally, and this is coming from my model making days, I thought of Enamel. However, looking into paint types, I have seen Polyurethane, Alkyd etc.
Some people have also recommended cooking the parts for a couple of hours in the oven, after finishing the work, at about 65-75˚C. Is this advisable with the above named paints or indeed necessary?
Cheers.
