Im in the eairly stages of a radical build on my 01 Dakota quad cab. At 1st i didnt care for the maroon color (PRV) on my dakota. But whan the sun is on it is looks really nice and a little diffrent. The russet pearl in the base really stands out. So whats your guys opinion on a pearl color to use over my factory color. The existing russet pearl in my factory base or a custom pearl.Heres a pic of my truck to help u decide.

And also I have several flame jobs under my belt. But this is gonna be my 1st Phantom tribal flame job. And i really want a true Phantom effect. Shows only when the light hits it just right. Not an obvious effect suttle but striking. U know the real deal. So how many coats of pearl for a true effect. Sorry for all the questions. And thanks.....

Try a little red pearl in base clear but not the russet, the red that looks white in the jar.You can try the russet too but I think there will be a fine line between when there's not enough on and it doesn't show and when it's too much and comes on too strong.

What do you think of using the russet pearl then overlaping with the red pearl to create a negitive phantom flame multi pearl paint job. You got my wheels turning. Whats your opinion?

The only true test is to do a test panel.what I'm envisioning doesn't sound good but you'll never know without trying it.Some God aweful sounding stuff turns out to be nice sometimes if you try it.

WOW what an unexpected typical head up your *** remark to make.

Coming from i assume a fellow craftsman. Swaping ideas is productive. And yeah it should be anyone that has the skill level to make an idea a reality. Not showcase thier ignorant close mined sarcastic remarks.

BTW thanks REX. For a few ideas...

Dont assume, you'l' make an @ss out of your self. lighten up man, it was just a joke. if your looking to get a calender spot, better start stripping your truck now Manufacters want their product used from primer up, not a little graphic work over factory paint

Listen to EZ and don't insult him,he's been here from the start but is busy enough to be scarce. If he tells you something listen! When it comes to color Q's he,Scott and a few others are the ones with more experience than me.I just dabble in the custom stuff at the moment compered to these guys.He was joking but does have a good point. There's alot of time involved in learning this stuff (and lots of trial and error) and it's pretty rare the experienced pro's will even give you anything over the basic info with an explanation. Most will tell you something and you have to figure out the particulars and the why's.I was told years ago 'watch the good guys and ask a few Qs,you'll learn more than reading books or hanging out with the butchers'-as long as they aren't the primadonnas. That's how I learned 1/2 of what I know and my mentor was a firm believer in just giving you the basics and making you think and figure out the rest on your own.Drove me crazy but it was the best lesson I learned about this stuff.Someone telling you the answer doesn't teach you near as much as you doing homework and figuring it out for yourself.Don't mean to be hard on you,and no prob on the help if it did help, that's what we're here for (if any of my help works I want my name in there too

1stQuality,
You must *really* be close to someone close in the "BASF World" to get you in the BASF calendar with a stock paint job and a set of flames or graphics over it. I spent over $25000, in my truck and came *very* close to getting it in a calendar and their yearly T-shirts (but didn't make it...actually, they wanted me to drive over to Orlando, but could not do it that particular weekend), and this was even doing a ground up on it. So I can't fathom the idea of a stock truck (or close to it) with a graphic job on it to make the calendar.

If you didn't mention that you plan on keeping the stock paint and that you possibly could make the calendar, I would have definitely been thinking that you were doing the complete "custom" paint job including the base, but you mentioned you were using the stock paint as the base ?!?!?

Anyhoo, be sure and do a big test panel, so you can try out different paint color schemes to you, or your BASF friend will like for the shoot. I don't know if the ghost flame idea will get you in. Maybe a double or triple layer....just an idea!
...You never know....
Good luck to you!

Man thats what im talking about. Im finally getting some response. And im not eaisly offended. And lack of experience is something i dont have , Over 14 years of good high end quality refinish and collision repair. i-car certified ETC.
Anyway enough about me.

My truck is in the process of a major reworking.
Suicide rear doors, complete body shave. Custom fabricated mechanical retractable tag kit. Molded into the roll pan. Hand fabficated custom front grill. Bags. Custom 1 of head lamps. ETC.
And With my prior feature in Muscle Mustang With My Contour SVT having won Fun Ford best paint. In 2002. Combined that indeed i do have a high level connection with the BASF brass. Is how i was able to close a corperate sponser. Its what you know & who you know.

And all i was hoping to achive here on this site and welth of information was some fresh ideas and input. I can and have created some fantastic paint jobs. However im lacking in the imagination dept.

So i do appologize for coming off rough and green. Because im not either. Sorry again fellas. And any more info is greatly apprecieated.
And i always acknowledge the people that contribute to my projects.
