I have to strip a sportster tank due to decals under the clear, can you tell me the process ? I would just take 80 on a block and take it down and cross cut with 180 and then prime... id use the D839 Primer which is PPG Global... what do guys use and whats your method for stripping tanks ?

I used to leave the original paint on tanks when I painted them, but now I strip it down to metal before starting. I've had troubles with paint wrinkling up when applied over varying substrates. Saves time in the long run.

I bought some paint stripper from the hardware store...can't remember which brand...but it was designed for removing urethane as well as 'regular' paint. Some others didn't mention the urethane. Those didn't come close to performing like the uruthane remover did. If you want I can get the brand and post it later. The stuff is nasty, but it works! Took the clear coat, base coat and primer off a Honda Shadow tank with just one application in most spots.

I spray the prepped metal with PPG epoxy primer, sand, then squirt the base coat.

The stuff is called Zip Strip. Comes in a yellow and black can. Says it is for 5 - 6 layers of paint, marine use, etc. Produces lots of fumes, so use in well ventilated area. (duh) Make sure you follow directions with it. If you leave it on long enough, the paint starts to bubble up and practically falls off by itself.

As with any stripper, make sure you have every bit of it off before you paint or you'll have a mess later on. Rinse with a hose or a car wash if you can. Squirt the water into all the little cracks and crevises, then do it again. Water is cheap. Having to completely repaint the thing isn't.

I have used zip strip. I sprayed the tank standing on end and went for a cup of coffee. 10 minutes later I came back and most of the paint actually slid off onto the floor. By far the best stuff I have used. I prefer to have all the sheetmetal sandblasted. It saves me some time and it gives a nice surface for the filler and primer to bite.
