Where to get tanks and fenders

I'm ready to start trying my hand at some flame jobs. I considered buying some mail boxes to practice on, but I don't want to lay a 100 dollars of paint on a freakin mailbox and then try to sell it. I'd rather go ahead and get a tank and some fenders so I've got something usefull once I'm happy with what I've done.

So what's the most popular tank and fenders to sell? And do I just go to the Harley dealer and order some raw parts or are there other sources?

If you buy them from Harley they'll cost you an arm and a leg!!
Do you want to make money off these parts or are you trying to gain experience??
The reason I ask is there are easier ways to get free parts!!
Go to your local bike shop and introduce yourself as a beginer custom painter and that you'd like to paint some flames on one of there bikes or parts on the wall - take some samples of stuff you've painted if you can - ie: Mailbox, trashcan...
The idea here is to get your foot in the door. If you can stike a deal like you'll paint it and pay for your costs if when they sell it you get a predetermined price you'll only be out of pocket for the paint until it sells. OR - Ask them to only pay for the materials and mark your materials up a bit - say it costs you 250 - then charge 350 -- to them it's still a deal!! --- Thats the way I got started 6 years ago - give a little away and people will spread the word. then build your reputation bfore your prices go up. I actually stopped painting for a year and a half and when I jumped back in It was easy -- You'd be suprised how fast the word gets out among the bike community --- Do the best work you can and always try to do a little more than what the customer asked for -- I did a sporty tank and the guy just wanted the the sides done - I did the sides but also did the top of the tank with the same basic design - it took me and extar hour of time and when the customer picked it up he was ecstatic and actually tried to give me a 100.00 tip -- did I take it?? Nope - It would be worth more top me in the "spreading of the word" than to take it -- now anytime anybody asks this guy about his paint he says "Bones did it and he even threw in the top for free, I tried to give some extra cash, but he wouldn't take it"

Thanks Bones. Excellent advice.

I guess I forgot the basics of business there for a second. Every business needs to show samples of what they can do, 'cause you just can't expect people to give money on promises alone.

Instead of jumping right into a tank and fenders to sell, I think I'll do a mailbox or two and consider them cheap & easy to carry prototypes. That way I'll always have samples to show to the shops.

Some times the job you lose the most on could actually make you the most money.
Example:
I painted a police issue harley for my uncle. I got a tranny and gearbox for the paint job. He is also big in the local Cleveland biker community. He stopped at a local custom bike builder's shop. The owner of the shop asked who did the paint and told him to get me down there to talk business.

Torquewrench there is always plenty of tanks, fenders etc. on Ebay. I would take the time to strip them down to metal before I started with them. At least you know what condition tank your dealing with if you plan on selling these to folks. Probably not a bad idea to seal them inside also. Cheaper than dealer bought parts.
Wouldn't a HONDA tank be just like a mailbox
