white base over black?

I've got a mailbox I want to paint in a classic yellow orange red sequence. The mailbox is black and I know it's best to lay down a white base for the flames so the yellow will cover. Will the white lay down over a scuffed black and cover well? I would like to use the existing black as a ground.

Probably will take a few coats to get covered, then you still have the other colors to do though.
You might want to try a white mailbox, fade it from yellow to orange to red, then tape up flames and spray the surrounding area black. This will give you a nice crisp edge.

Thanks Scott. I guess I never really thought about doing it kind of backwards. I guess with all the months of reading the boards I've got it drilled into my head of doing the basecoat then the flames.
