I am new to this site and am I glad to see a free exchange of information. But now I am worried that I might have screwd upsome past jobs. Everybody seems to agree that all base coats need to be cleared within 24 hours. If thats the case than I have messed up . The last few jobs I did where multipal colors . I would spray a color, let it dry tape the next color lightly sand and spray and so on and so on. Then go back and stripe and apply signage. Then wash and lightly sand or scotchbrite the piece before clearing . So this could take as long as a week before its finnaly cleared. Whats your oppinion?

I would think that as long as you scuffed everything before you cleared you should be in good shape. If you cleared over some unscuffed areas you may see some problems.

A chemical bond between base and clear is always better. That doesn't mean a mechanical bond won't last, just may peel later if scratched.jim

You should be fine. If you read the p-sheets its states with most bases to clear within 24 hrs after 24 hrs lightly scuff surface. Like jim said if it can be done within 24 hrs that would always be perferred.

So far so good. Most of the things I paint are race orientated so a nice paint job is short lived. But if there is a problem I will blame it on nitrous freeze or race gas LOL.

IF YOU HAVE A JOB WITH A LOT OF ART WORK ON IT AND CANT SCUFF EVERYTHING YOU CAN ALWAYS DUST A FEW COATS OF ADHEISION PROMOTER /BONDING CLEAR OVER YOUR JOB. I USE IT ON ALMOST EVERYTHING.

IN THE (OLD DAYS) WHEN WE WERE STILL USING LACQUER BUT WANTED A URETHANE TOP COAT WE WOULD CLEAR THE ART IN WITH A FEW COATS OF LAC,SAND ,THEN USE BONDING CLEAR AND PUT DOWN 3 COATS OF PPG 82 CLEAR(NOT REC OVER LAC)NO PROBLEMS WITH ADHEISION.

PPG ,DUPONT ECT... ALL THE LARGER PAINT MFG HAVE THEIR OWN VERSION OF IT. PPGs IS CALLED BONDING CLEAR(DSX1900).I HAVE BEEN USING IT FOR YEARS SO I'M A LITTLE FUZZY ON THE EXACT FACTORY REC USAGE,BUT HERES WHAT I REMEMBER THE REP TELLING US.

IN GENERAL AUTO REFINISHING ,WHEN DOING A REPAIR ON A PANEL THAT HAS BAKED BC/CC IT IS SOMTIMES DIFFICULT TO GET ADHEISON ON BLENDS OR IN VERY HARD TO SAND AREAS. 2 LIGHT COATS OF BONDING CLEAR WILL "OPEN" THE SURFACE TO ENHANCE ADHEISION.

FLAT S THIS IS NOT TO SAY THAT PROPER SURFACE PREP CAN BE SKIPPED. THE PREP IS THE MOST IMP. PART OF ANY JOB. (PROPER SANDING/CLEANING) BUT IT WAS A LITTLE TRICK THAT ME AND A FEW OTHER CUSTOM GUYS AROUND HERE THOUGHT OF TO ELIMINATE THE MULT LAYERS OF CLEAR OVER ARTWORK AND STILL HAVE A JOB THAT THE CLEAR ISN'T BLOWING OFF IN THE END.
IT SHOULD NOT BE USED AS A BARRIER FOR ADDITIONAL TAPEOUTS . FOR EXAMPLE TO PROTECT THE PEARL IN A HOC SHIMRIN BASE. THAT IS WHERE AN INTERCOAT CLEAR SHOULD BE USED.
HOPE THIS HELPS, DAVE

A tech rep for R-M told me that the only reason they even have a "Recoat Window" is to reduce the chance of contaminating the base before its cleared. He said that the time limit to apply the clear is virtually unlimited, just as long as the base stays clean and since the basecoat is solvent sensitive, the clear will still bite into it even after its dry.

Ive been told that also. But when I get my work down I never want to chance it! I break my neck to get my clear down in the 24hr window. A buddy of mine thinks Im crazy. He does a LOT of paint graphix work and said hes waited three weeks before clearing. He said hes never had anything come back on him. Maybe one of these days when I get in a jamb Ill go over the 24hrs but it I can help it Ill stay within the 24hrs.

I HAVE SEEN A FEW JOBS (THANK GOD NOT MINE) THAT YOU COULD BLOW THE CLEAR OFF WITH AN AIR HOSE DUE TO WAITING TOO LONG TO CLEAR .
WAY TOO MUCH WORK INVOLVED IN A CUSTOM JOB TO TAKE A CHANCE .

JUST MY OPINION.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Think I have read somewhere that with these newer waterbased paints there is no 24hr window at all. In fact you can leave your base for weeks before having to clear, and it will still stick. has nyone this on how true it is. Here in the UK by 2007 we have to use waterbased base colours, only leaves clear coates to be solvent based. Seems a good thing and could save our lungs for another paint day. PS happy new year to everyone.

We I took my PPG cert class we got a quick lesson on waterbase. There is NO window! Thats right none! But its very easy to screw it up. It you get it wet it will come right off. Im was really impressed with how it laid down.
