How would I get this look?

I'd like to paint my motorcycle in a colour that looks like the above. As an inexperienced painter I would appreciate any advice as to how that shimmer effect is got, and what colours and type of paint would most likely replicate it. I guess it's a candy over a (pearl?) base, would that be a silver base with an orange candy over it then cleared or is there more to it? Thanks.

Gold or copper mettalic base... then candy tangerine over it... that would be my guess.... go by a car paint supplier and look at HOK(house of color) color chips... they will fix you up.... or other brands as well...

That does look to be the way to go, although pretty advanced for me I think. I've still to get my head around the different effects offered by pearls as opposed to candy. As a newbie painter there's a so much to learn. I'm currently painting my other bike using Mazda's velocity red which is a mica/pearl over a coloured base. It's working well, although difficult to keep all the components the same shade as I'm having to do them separately. I kinda hoped there would be an orange version of this same stuff as it really comes alive in the sun.

Thats nice!!!! If you can paint as good as that,i dont see why you wouldnt be able to do the colour your after(in the first pic). Ive just been rubbing down some paint that looked like the mazda colour youve painted. Its a yamaha tzr50,which was red,but in the sun i could see gold speckles. The odd thing was,as i was rubbing it down,i cut thru the red,and found a gold base coat. I had thought if anything it would have been a red base with the mica in gold over the top.
The good thing about painting (im still inexperienced and have a lot to learn!),is that you do actually learn something new most days!
Go for it,you know you want too!!!!

I keep on seeing a red mazda parked near my dad's house, and the colour always attracts my eye,its just a bright red (non pearl/metallic etc),but i think it would look good on one of my suzuki gsx1100 efe's (for the us readers suzuki gs1150e).
I think a lot of the car makers have some paint finishes that a few years ago would have won car shows. Paints probably come a long way.

That's why I joined this forum. The work these guys are turning out is awe inspiring, I need to learn - lots. At the moment I feel like a child taking it's first steps. :haha: My main interest is in classic bikes but I don't see why they can't be given eye watering paint jobs without straying too far from the factory styles. I'd like to learn how to blend custom paint with classic style.

Old Nail,
You can go with a basecoat/clearcoat, but yet it is a candy color. You spray the base, spray the clear, and actually watch the color turn to a candy.
I've sprayed many trike bodies to match the original factory Honda finish. Below is just an example of their tangerine color

This way you don't have to actually spray a tri-stage to get the candy effect.

That's just what I'm looking for TAZ but being new to painting I don't yet know the correct terms for the various paint types. What would a base coat that turns out to look like candy be known as? What would I ask for? The paint on that big ole mothership there is exactly the kind of finish I want. Spoke to my paint factors and he tried to tell me candy was the only way to achieve that look?

Honda Goldwings (and other Honda bikes) have some great colors.
Check out " US Paint " (Google them). You'll see all the colors they have to offer.
Easy to spray. VERY good coverage. Basecoat/Clearcoat type paints that are really candy type paints.

a safe bet in my eyes would be house of kolor paint,
uk08 or kk08 tangerine over a bc01 basecoat
if you would like to add to the extra wow factor of the colour mix a uk08 1 to 1 with a mbc01 and then
spray over a coarse silver, its a real eye opener of a colour :)

My guess would be a silver or gold base with orange candy over it and as a finish a clearcoat with an orange pearl to get the extra shimmer.

you can also get the same effect just spraying a solid orange base with a gold pearl midcoat , Kinda like PPG's Vibrance Collection O-SO-Orange except the O-SO-Orange uses Emberglo in the midcoat

Emberglo...didn't know that!
I always thought those were just considered PPG "Crystals".

haha special crystals! But ya its 30grams of Emberglo Mixed with a quart of DBC500 . you right about the crystals tho they pop alot more than just pearl . Thats why I said gold pearl mixed with clear for a top coat to get that shimmer on the edges.
But the HOK would be the best and cheapest route to go for that look . Thats a sweet color on that wing TAZ looks Great!
