My first try at painting candy.

I thought id be brave and show the you (the paint experts and gods!)my first attempts at painting candy. The paint job was on a friends Yamaha FJ1100 trike.
After all the prep work,i painted the panels a high content bright silver base, then applied a silver sparkle coating or two (mini flake)before applying the candy. The candy is a 2 pac mix, which to me seems very much like a heavily tinted clear coat. The manufacturers even say that you dont have to clear coat if you do not wish too. However,i did,i used a hi-solid 2 pac clear coat.

When i was finished painting the tank,i placed it somewhere safe,in the spare bedroom, and to my horror, somebody or something had scratched the fresh paint. Id always believed that you cant touch in candy, but gave it a try. I wet sanded the damaged area, taking the candy off, going back to were i could see silver,re applied silver sparkle, and then candied it. Clear coat to finish, and to my amazement,it matched in to the human eye!
I think this was either good luck on my part,or down to the fact it was a 2 pac paint?? I dont think id be as lucky next time! (not that there will be a next time with paint getting damaged!).

Thanks for kind comments. It was initially a job i didnt enjoy doing, but when it was finished,it looked really nice. Not particuarly my type of colour, but,i could see the appeal of candy paints!
As I type this,im actually waiting the postman to deliver a 1 litre can of vivid red candy paint for me! My next thread here will be,"here's my second attempt at candy painting"!!

Nice job for a first attempt. I'm about to try my first candy paint job on my own bike, and funny enough it's an orangey gold colour that I need. What was the sparkle stuff you mention?

Hi Old Nail,Its great to see that your in the Uk,as I can direct you to where i buy my paints from! The sparkly stuff,is actually called silver shimmer, and its available from SHIMMER | Specialist Paints | Custom coatings & special effects. I tend to buy off them from egay,as i can simply click away, and but 250ml cans from them. A 250ml tin of the silver shimmer did the whole yamaha fj1200 trike project (2 rear mudguards, tank, sidepanels, tailpiece, front mudguard, headlight). Its mixed 2:1 and sprays easily,i used a 1mm tip. I used a silver base,by the way. The candy paint i bought, again from that auction site, but this time from a company called nuagane, heres a link,Tango Orange 2k Candy Bike Car Paint | eBay UK. I'll see if i can find some more pics, and post them up.

As you can see, when the candy is applied, the silver shimmer pops! I read somewhere on this site (i think),that if a coat of gold pearl was added over the top,it would be even better again. Click on pic to see video.

Thanks for the reply dixie, that colour is pretty close to what I've been considering, so much so I recognised the photo of the tin of paint from ebay. :haha:

When you say you mixed that sparkle 2:1 what was it mixed with? Do you mean the sparkle comes pre-mixed in it's own binder? I thought it was just dry glitter in a bag like on Christmas cards. I'd also need smaller flakes what size were they? I need something more subtle than those ones you used as they are great on an all-out custom but my bike is an old classic. I'll put a couple of pictures here to show you what I was thinking.

This is the original colour on my bike. You can't tell unless you get up close but it is a candy not solid colour. My 'problem' is that even when repainted back to original they just look orange and boring. (see below)

So what I would like to do is paint it so I get the effect like in the pic below. I've no idea what paint that is but it's perfect for the look I wanted, which is somewhere between gold and burnished orange depending on how the light hits it.

Ive got to admit, im no expert,so my guess to achieve that type of colour would be a candy orange over either a silver or gold base coat, with (my guess?)a light dusting of gold pearl over the top? Maybe one of the more experience painters could tell us what the finish is??
The differance between that colour in your pic,and the paint i did,is,yours is classy and mine is blingy!
As they say,"fashion changes, style remains",so yours wins hands down.
Nice Kawasaki by the way,a great classic.
