I am working on my first paint job of painting my motorcycle. I am using HOK paints.

What is the proper way to go about this?? In terms of which paint, when..?

I fixed up all the pieces.

I have the bike pieces all primer and just about sanded ready for paint and i changed my mind.

I was going to go one straight colour:

IMG-20110203-00268-1.jpg

But I think I want to do a paint scheme something like this drawing:

1-2.jpg

I am going the colour I posted about for the (blue) and silver for the lines (kind of like lightning) how I should go about doing it?

Should I paint the hole bike silver first put pieces on bike and use stencils/tape for the lines... Then paint the blue... Then take stencils off to spray the clear coat....?

Should I do it in this order???:

Primer done
Spray - primer sealer (Ko-Seal)
Spray - "orion silver" metallic (BC02)
Spray - intercoat clear??? (SG100)
Tape/stencil
Spray - "real teal" Pearl (PBC58)
Stencils off
Spray clear (UC35)

By the way...
I am doing this in a small room (old garage) probably 12x14. So overspray is kind of an issue. I do have a fan blowing out for exhaust though.
But Im saying this about overspray as part of another question..?

Should I leave the primer sealer overnight, scuff up a bit with scuff pad, before doing the paint?
Should I scuff the silver a bit before intercoat clear?? and stencils??
Same with paint before clear coat???

Or should I spray primer sealer, and silver at one time? when the sealer has "flashed"??

Sorry, like I said I'm new to painting vehicles... Only really plan on doing my own maybe a couple friends if I do a good job.. lol

Thanks in advanced :)

Pretty much the as you have listed

spray the sealer, then about 10 minutes later, spray the silver.
DONT leave the primer sealer (KS sealer) sit overnight. We've had wrinkle/peeling problems doing this before.
Spray a coat of interclear
mask up your cracks or shreds.
spray the main color.
remove mask, then clearcoat.
sand and reclear if needed.

As far as overspray, you should be all right with the basecoat, just keep your pressure low.
Your clear might be a problem. It'll fill up the room pretty quick. So keep your pressure low as possible.

Ok, thanks a lot!!

Should the intercoat clear be scuffed up a bit before the main color?? or just cleaned? since it would probably be a day or two between masking and spraying...

You should be save if you do the main base and clear within 48 hours. Any more, I would scuff it with at least 1000 grit wet.
Just try to get it done asap. You can start masking after a couple hours or so.

Be sure and post pics when you are done (or during the process)

Actually, if you plan on pinstriping the edges, I would do the job differently than I mentioned above.
I would go ahead and paint the main color first.
Then I would mask up the parts. Draw out the areas. Cut them out. Spray them silver.
Then I would add some faint drop shadows around the edges.
You can really only do this if you make the silver areas bigger than in your graphic. See pic below.
Then you pull off all your mask, clearcoat it.
Resand it, add the pinstripes. Reclear again.

Just a different way of doing it. I would only do it this way if you plan on doing the pinstripes.
Doing it this way, gives you the ability to add some drop shadows right after you do the silver. Plus any 'crispy' edges you get will be covered by the pinstripes.

I think some brighter solid teal pinstripes would look great against the edge of the real teal main color.

That would be awesome to try to do. But I dont have an airbrush yet, I was planning on getting one sometime though... Smallest gun I have right now is a small touch up gun with a 1mm tip. I also don't have paint to do the shadows, black??? darker silver???

I'm probably not experienced enough for all of that either :S, like I said this is my first real paint job
I can picture what you suggested, and it would look amazing. If I had someone else do it maybe??? lol.... :S
As far as paint goes I only have the primer sealer, real teal, silver metallic, intercoat clear, and final clear coat. I have nothing for shadows or pin striping. But if I felt I could actually do that I would get some for sure...
I know I could start with a test panel which I already have planned to do on a 1'x3' old metal shelf that is primered just like the rest of my bike.. But the problem is the $$ side of things.. I wouldnt want to get the paint and waste it by messing up on a test panel lol...
Any way of doing the shadows and pin stripes maybe.. When I get some more $$ down the road..?

If I do decide to attempt it now, what paint do u suggest using?

For the drop shadows, just use an over-reduced black. You want this to be very thin (more reducer than normal)
As far as the pinstripes, you could use the House of Kolor pinstripe paints.

You can use your mini gun for the drop shadows. Just turn everything down so you have a very small pattern with minimal fluid coming out. Good gun control will also help.

I once airbrushed a cobra's head using an old Binks7 gun. The graphic was about 3'x3'

Alright, thanks a lot!!!

I'll post pics when I get it done, or during. (which ever way I decide to do it)

How about this for the pin striping??: One-Shot Enamels Using the "kanas city teal". HOK doesn't seem have a colour like you suggested.

Thanks again

Sounds good...looking forward to seeing the pics.
As far as the pinstripe color, it's very hard to judge color over the internet. What you see on your monitor, could be different from what I see.
BUT, from I see, it's not too bad. I would go for a light teal. You don't want it too close to the base color. You want good contrast

I might attept this...

How do you think it would look done kind of like u said but with no pin strips, just try to put a shadow kind of all the way around them... with the black...?

Hey guys, new at this forum thing but better with paint. If your base is lighter then the the cracked design then a drop shadow will work. However a drop shadow is only on 1 side of the shape not the whole way around. And if the image you are shadowing is black the shadow needs to be very lite. I saw that u mentioned 1shot. Be very carefull that the 1shot has dried all the way (days) if you are going to clear over with auto clear. 1shot will drag!

These are the colors.

Main color:
PBC58.jpg

Crack color:
BC02.jpg

So should I do it something like this:
1sa.jpg

Sorry, pic isnt very great but u can kinda see where I quickly added some shadows on the top side.... :S

Thanks a lot!!!

I see the cracks are lighter then the blue. You could shadow the inside of the crack (only on 1 side). That though would make it look like recesses. If you shadow the outside of cracks then the crack is casting the shadow.

SW is right. We normally put a very light shadow all the way around, BUT a little heavier on one side (the same on all the tears or graphics).

And yes, Be very careful with the one shot. Red is terrible bleeding onto lighter colors.

Thanks a lot guys...

The rest of my paint just got here so I might work on it for the rest of today... and tomorrow...

I think I may just skip the pin striping part. Just do the tears with silver and a shadow maybe....
