where to stop the paint at gas fill

I have to say Scott runs a tight ship here and this sight is the best I've found on the topic, one of these days I'll stop in and see him since it's only a 90 mile ride.I visit a Harley site and moderate one of 2 Colt 45 sites I go to,but I must say it's refreshing to hang here.Don't get me wrong,by nature I'm a rude and crude dog (hell I was named after one),but the likes of Psycho whoever would have been booted from any of them.Thumbs up for Scott big time,I probably didn't mushy before but Scott's the man for creating what he has. This is a great info place too.Scott,Ezrider and Shaunboy know their **** ,listen to them.I love ya Shaunboy, you actually make me think some times since we each have a different terminology from the different parts of the world we live in.I like to see a place like this grow, and it is.

As things turn out GAS will get to Dupont Select Clear!

I decided to test this out..... I painted the bung with each coat of what ever happend to get to the bung....

I also was determined to look daily and more at that paint incase things went bad..... It took 3 days and there was a definate bad ...

So with a paper towel stuffed in the bung, I took a single edge razor to that paint , and shaved to bare steel to out side the gas cap seal.

I am going to seal that with nail polish right at the paint edge, and pray!

So A+ for the board and F forall those that think clear can't go bad with gas! Thanks again Scott!

Up date: it has been about 4 weeks now that the paint that had started to lift, and I removed with the razor blade with great care has been gone.

The "lift" was a gooey mess fer sure!

With the blade I removed the paint that was trapped against the rubber seal for the cap, to bare metal, and no more peeling has occured to date.

I still watch for signs of peeling as I get gas, and find none.

There has not been any sealing so far with clear, or nail polish. The metal is bare, and the paint edge is just about 1/64th" from the rubber seal.

The raw paint edge shows all the layers of paint, which are a good many.... But the removal of the trapped paint lifting in time saved the job once again.......

You guys are great! I really like this site, and wish I could help more, but then I am a know nuthin 1st timer....

Scott, Rex, and EZ thanks for all the help.... Mac

Hey Mac,go ahead and seal up the edge before it's too late. The bare steel will rust eventually,no matter what, and it'll creep under the paint edge.Grab a bottle of the little womans polish and outline it.Just make sure it's enamel topcoat. There's quite a few different purpose clears, but clear or color topcoat enamel is all you want to use.

clear nail polish will do it right?

Can this go where the rubber seal seats to stop fuel from coming out? OR should the steel be bare there, and just seal the edge paint where I see layers?

I don't want to buy a can of catalized clear for a drop... Mac

Clear nail polish works great, just make sure it's topcoat enamel, not the clear hardner, strengthner or whatever the hell else there is available.I hate to say it but ask the wife, she'll know the difference

.I don't get any on the edge of the bung,I prefer the seal to be on metal at the bung but on the polish at the paint side.I don't know how wide your seal is but a Harley's touches maybe 1/8".If you need a very thin line to seal, hold the brush that comes with polish perpendicular to the paint edge-or,your reaching across the filler hole with the brush to touch the paint edge. This gives you a finer line than dragging around the edge like you're striping it.I use 2 coats and let them dry good (again ask the wife) before puttting the cap on.15 minutes in 75-80 degrees is usually fine.

Ok will do. I only wish it was 85 or so here...

you can swim in this heat and muggyness!

i spent yesterday working on a engine below deck jammed between the hull and 1 of 2 engines..... not to happy about it..

The tank paint still is fine... the rubber seal is about 1/4" wide, and there is a flip type cover on a hindge, which covers the area well over what needs to be covered..

The cap has a lock so no one can steal the gas..... all 3 gallons...LOL remeber the late 70's and the early 80's gas crunch? I guess thats why the lock is there....

Thanks for the tip on the brushing on too!

But lemme see if I get this right???

I cover the edge of the paint to the seal, but not on bare metal where the rubber is, or not much there, and do 2 coats at the paint edge. Right??? Mac
