Back Yard Painter

All right, it's sanded out. It dried so hard I had to use 360 dry to kill the top and then I used 800 wet to finish it out. It is smoother than a babys butt. I wiped everything down with clear water and dried it off. Then used a tact cloth. I will use a new tact cloth just before i shoot it. Is there anything else I should do before I paint?

Kool, I just set up my paint booth and fans so I'm ready to rock. I'll bet you thought that was it for questions from me:haha: I have a few more. I'm not going to put a clear coat over this flat black. I don't want to go threw all the mixing and testing that goes with making the clear coat a flat finish. That said, what is a good product to use to buff and protect the finish coat after it has cured and set up good and hard:think1:

I thought you were going for the 'flat' gloss look. Maybe I'm missing something here. Did you mean a flat surface?

At Last

It makes a lot of difference when everything is set right. Even the frame turned out just like I had hoped.:bounce:

If it wasn't for everybodys help, I was just about to trade the BMW in on a minstrel cycle. Just fyi Home Depot has that new Rust-Oleum automotive paint in now. Not a lot of colors to pick from yet but they can mix the color you are looking for. They also have a new clear coat to pick from. Gloss and Matt. I'm not going to shoot a clear coat so any advice on a wax, polish, or compound to top this off would really help. I don't want to screw it up now.
Thanks again, Jess

Yea, it is a lot of fun to ride. It is a 1983 R100RS. Seems like I have been throwing money at that bike for a long time. If the part you buy says BMW on it I have to look at the check book first. The BMW stickers/plates that go on the tank were $24 each. I'm still trying to find out what to put over my finished coat. Some kind of wax or polish or?

Jess, Looks great as it is. Heck, should be Home Depot front page material for their website. Maybe you can open a whole new avenue of business for them (like they need it... :haha: )

If you want to keep that look, DON"T wax it.
Lookin great

Done

I thought about it and wanted to add a clearcoat to finish it off. I toned it down to a clear matt and shot 3 coats over the last coat. I put the same clearcoat on a practice piece and just dumped gas on it. The clear held up just like I hopped it would. I wiped it off with a clean rag and it didn't spot at all.
I'm going for a ride.

Thanks, I learned a lot of things not to do on this one. I still want to put a coat of wax or something over the clearcoat. Does anyone have a special product you have used that I can finish it up with?

Sounds like you got enough paint on it. Possibly moisture got to it? Moisture doesn't make it fuzzy, but it does give it a dull velvet type appearance.
OR, like tomsteve said, it could be orange peel or possibly even wrinkling

A pic might help.
